How to Become a Security Guard in the UK
A practical guide to SIA licensing, security guard training, first aid, application checks, licence renewal and choosing the right security role.

For most people who want to work as a contracted security guard in the UK, the route is straightforward: check that you meet the Security Industry Authority (SIA) eligibility requirements, hold the required first aid qualification, complete the correct licence-linked security guarding qualification, apply for the appropriate SIA licence and then maintain your training and licence status.
The exact licence you need depends on the work you will actually perform. Security guarding, door supervision, public space surveillance (CCTV), close protection and key holding are different licensable activities, and some licences cover more activities than others.

Check Your Eligibility
You must be at least 18. The SIA also checks identity, address history, criminal record information and, in most cases, your right to work in the UK. Other information can also affect whether you are considered suitable to hold a licence.
Get the Required First Aid Qualification
Before starting security guard licence-linked training, you must hold an acceptable first aid qualification. The SIA requires it to remain valid for at least another 12 months when you begin the relevant training.
Complete Licence-Linked Training
Complete the current licence-linked qualification for security guarding through a training provider approved by a recognised awarding organisation. Training providers are not “SIA approved”.
Apply for Your SIA Licence
Create an SIA online account and submit your application. The SIA will carry out its checks and may ask you to complete identity steps, provide documents or supply additional information before making a decision.
Keep Your Licence and Skills Current
SIA licences do not renew automatically. Security guard licence holders renewing their licence need the required refresher qualification, together with the applicable first aid requirement. Start the renewal process in good time.
Do You Always Need an SIA Licence to Work as a Security Guard?
Not always. SIA licensing depends on the activity you perform and how the security service is supplied. If you or your employer provides security services to another organisation under a contract for services and you carry out licensable activity, you will normally need the appropriate SIA licence.
People employed directly “in-house” by the organisation using their services do not usually need an SIA licence for ordinary security guarding. There are important exceptions, including door supervision at licensed premises. If you are uncertain, use the SIA’s official “Find out if you need an SIA licence” guidance before assuming a licence is or is not required.
Security Guard Licence, Door Supervisor or CCTV Licence?
Security Guard Licence
Generally covers guarding premises or property against theft, damage, unauthorised access or disorderly behaviour. It does not cover every form of public space surveillance activity.
Door Supervisor Licence
Required for licensable door supervision at licensed premises. A door supervisor licence also allows the holder to perform licensable security guarding activity.
Public Space Surveillance (CCTV)
This licence is required for certain CCTV monitoring activities involving identifying people or monitoring their activities for specified security purposes. The correct licence depends on exactly how the CCTV is being used.
Licence integration can be important when choosing training. For example, a door supervisor licence covers security guarding activity, while a security guard licence does not automatically cover door supervision.
Security Guard Training in 2026
Before applying for a front line security guarding licence, new applicants need the appropriate SIA licence-linked qualification. Current SIA guidance lists the qualification as the Level 2 Award for Working as a Security Officer in the Private Security Industry in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, with a separate Scottish qualification route.
The SIA specifies what licence-linked training must cover, but training providers are approved and quality-assured by awarding organisations rather than by the SIA itself. Be cautious of providers advertising themselves as “SIA approved”.
As of August 2026, SIA guidance gives security guarding training a minimum duration of 30 hours over 4 days with permitted self-study, or 38 hours over 5 days without self-study. Course delivery and price are set by the training provider, so check the current official requirements before booking.
First Aid, Counter-Terrorism and Personal Safety
First Aid
Security guard and door supervisor learners must hold an acceptable first aid qualification before beginning the relevant licence-linked or refresher training. The qualification must meet the SIA’s current requirements and remain valid for at least another 12 months.
ACT Counter-Terrorism Training
Current licence-linked training includes terror-threat awareness. Free ACT Awareness and ACT Security e-learning is available through ProtectUK and can be useful for both new and experienced security operatives.
Physical Intervention
Security guarding training includes knowledge about personal safety and the risks of physical intervention. It should not be confused with the practical physical intervention content associated with door supervision training.
Applying for an SIA Security Guard Licence
Once you have the correct qualification, you can apply through your SIA online account. The SIA checks your identity and suitability and may check information including your address history, criminal record and right to work in the UK.

- You need the correct licence-linked qualification before applying for a front line security guarding licence.
- You must provide the information and identity evidence requested by the SIA.
- If you have lived outside the UK for extended periods, additional overseas criminal record evidence may be required.

An application is not automatically approved simply because you have passed training. The SIA makes the licensing decision after completing its checks.
Renewing a Security Guard Licence
SIA licences do not renew automatically. You can normally apply to renew up to four months before expiry. Current SIA rules require people renewing a security guard licence to hold both the applicable full licence-linked qualification and the Level 2 Award for Security Officers in the Private Security Industry (Refresher).
The required first aid qualification must also be in place before taking refresher training. The SIA says security guard refresher training generally involves around half a day to one day of in-person training, depending on the amount of permitted self-study.
